Will the Belgians race to the European title in their own country?
While Belgians have won places on the podium in recent years, we haven’t made it to gold yet. Van Aert came second last year, as did Evenepoel in 2021. Lotte Kopecky won bronze in Drenthe last year. We are sure of a great field of participants, as well as a unique start at the Velodrome next to our track. From the Velodroom car park, the riders will head to and through Circuit Zolder and then on to Zolder and the finish in Hasselt.
The road portion of the championships consists of a loop of Hasselt and one of Limburg, starting with a round at Circuit Zolder. The Hasselt loop is a flat route through the area surrounding the provincial capital and the adjoining Diepenbeek municipality. In Hasselt the route follows part of the ring road around the city centre. During the Limburg loop in the Borgloon area, the peloton will have their bones shaken by the cobbles of Manshoven and Op De Kriezel, across Kolmontberg and Zammelenberg. This Limburg loop shares the same DNA as the Tour of Limburg. Depending on the distance, competitors will do more or less rounds of the Hasselt and Limburg loops.
The European Championships can be viewed free of charge from along the public road and at the start at the Velodrome. Can Belgians score in their own country? We intend to be vocal in our support!
