iLumen European Solar Challenge

The sunniest 24 Hours with a Belgian world champion

Fresh, smart and already making a name for itself. The 24-hour iLumen European Solar Challenge takes place every two years at Circuit Zolder. The iESC is the only endurance race of this calibre for fully electric cars in the world. Green and admittance is free!

“We expect a wide selection of student teams. These teams design and build their own cars, sometimes interrupting their studies to do so. iLumen European Solar Challenge participants travelled to Australia for the World Cup last year and interest is high. This year for the first time, we are also admitting teams from outside Europe,” says organiser Thomas Voets.

Drivers depend on smart energy consumption, advanced aerodynamics and racing insight to take their teams to victory. Vehicles are allowed up to two charging stops. KU Leuven’s Innoptus Solar Team, the reigning world champion, will also be present. On 26 October 2023, Innoptus Solar Team finished first with its Infinite in Australia. This was the second time the team won the World Championship! They also won the 2022 iLumen European Solar Challenge.

There will also be ‘Greenville’, a market for energy and green technology at the track’s Congress Centre. Together with all the information sessions on solar energy, it is sure to attract thousands of visitors.
